Digital distribution sales of videogames are taking an increasingly large share of the market, compared to sales by physical retailers like GameStop. For a sense of just how far the trend has come, market research firm NPD Group said on Monday that during the first six months of this year in the U.S., 11.2 million PC games (full games like Electronic Arts' Battlefield: Bad Company 2) were purchased online through digital download compared to 8.2 million physical units purchased at physical retail stores during the same period, according to its survey.
That's a difference of 3 million units -- not a small gap. However, in terms of revenues, games sold at physical retailers are still ahead. They made up 57% of the revenue compared to 43% from digitally downloaded games. NPD attributed this to a higher average selling price at retail stores compared to online retailers. But though retail prices are higher at physical retailers, the margins per unit may be smaller when factoring in the cost of packaging and shipping for a physical game. It would be interesting to see the gap not only in revenue but in profit when comparing the sales of physical versus digital.
"The overall decline of PC games when combining sales via both digital downloads and physical retail sales is impacted by the expansion of social network gaming as well as the continued expansion of free game options," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier, in a note.
Frazier also said that the top two digital retailers from last year during the same period, Steam and Bigfish, stayed on top this year, capturing an even larger share of digital sales.
